The last concert of the year by defunensemble, will feature the power of collaboration, as Kenyan composer and sound artist Nyokabi Kariũki will visit the band for the second time. The collaboration, which began in spring 2023, will bring new and old jointly workshopd material to the concert, which will be combined with Kariũk's previously released and upcoming new album repertoire.

In From me to View, defunensemble takes the listener to their favourite landscapes from the primeval forest to the open sea, to a café in Kallio, childhood memories and an amusement park, and returns to the landscape the music that arose from the landscape.

Nyokabi Kariũki & Defunensemble
I have been spending some time in Helsinki working on music for my new album, which will explore the complexities of post-colonial African identities — particularly the way in which hybridity is a part of it — and using language as the crux of this exploration. I will be joined by the awesome Finnish contemporary ensemble, Defunensemble, and we will share some of this work-in progress music, and perhaps some orchestrations of music from my recently released record, FEELING BODY.
- Nyokabi Kariũki
Defunsensemble performs together with the Kenyan composer and sound artist Nyokabi Kariũki. The program, workshopped together with the composer, is a combination of Kariũki's already published and completely new repertoire.
The concert is part of the series in University of the Arts Research Pavilion 2023 events.The tagline for Research Pavilion #5 is “Puzzled Together”, framed by the current global challenges: the ecological sustainability crisis, post-pandemic reconstruction and geopolitical tensions.

“Unity Switch“ is a participative installation, which allows the participants to look through the eyes of different people and interact on a virtual level. Through the use of video glasses and cameras the perception of vision and sound is routed from one person to another. In this setting the constant switching of perception questions embodiment, body images, virtual distance and digital emotions. It is an exploration space aimed to create a personal experience. The aspects cover such contrasting associations as empathy, control, collaboration, isolation, virtuality and perceptual overload. While delivering a strong sensory input it is designed as a setting to be explored by the visitor – and created to allow a personal and emotional engagement.
NB: Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the start.The work is a very immersive experience. The audience participates by sitting together with a musician in the same room wearing video glasses and headphones. The work includes flashing lights and an intense soundscape. The work is not recommended for people with epilepsy or high sensitivity. Clear and simple instructions are given in English during the performance.
The work was co-comissioned by Musiikin aika festival and Defunensemble and premiered at the 2019 Musiikin aika festival in Viitasaari, Finland.

Nova Connection -club: defunensemble, Ilpo Väisänen
Musica nova’s opening night ends with the festival’s new Nova Connection club, which allows the listener to experience new and surprising, perhaps even challenging contemporary sound worlds inspired by different spheres and aesthetics in a relaxed club setting. During the opening night, two true Finnish supernovas take to the stage: the electroacoustic group defunensemble as well as the rarely-performing Ilpo Väisänen, the internationally best known Finnish maker and pioneer of experimental electronic music.
The defunensemble programme is built around the new Northern Connection project, which seeks inspiration from the Northern identity and landscape and attempts to promote international art music co-operation in an ecological manner. At the Nova Connection club, defunensemble premieres a new work by the young Scottish composer Lisa Robertson, among other things. The rest of the programme will be published early next year.
The club night ends with a stirring solo set by Ilpo Väisänen, turning the focus from the community on the individual.

SAT 11.02.2017, 21:30 Anna Meredith: Honeyed Words Islaja, vocals The Musica nova Helsinki concert by the defunensemble will showcase recent electroacoustic music of international and Finnish origin and culminate in a premiere of Islaja’s works arranged for defun. Despite its title, there are no words in Honeyed Words by up-coming British composer Anna Meredith. Instead, this piece for electronics and cello generates dialogue between “classical” and electronic music, the instruments and the notes themselves. Australia is the home of both Matthew Shlomowitz and, nowadays, Finnish-born Erkki Veltheim. The work by the latter, to be premiered at this concert, likens the search for a new idiom to the process of learning a language. The concert ends with some works by Islaja, one of Finland’s most distinctive singer-songwriter and now adopting a more electronic mode of expression in her latest SUU release, in arrangements for defun. Does God command us to kill? The themes involved in Autuus (Bliss) include religious violence, the relationship between an individual and a community, marginalisation and the frailty of the mind. The background for the work is a true story from Kangaslampi, Finland in the spring of 1881, when Chaplain Woldemar Hofström murdered his brother with a mallet.
The events in the work progress on several time lines, and the work is also musically and visually multi-layered. The overall audio production is the compilation of video material, along with soloists, a choir and a band on the stage.
The work was jointly commissioned from composer Antti Auvinen by defunensemble and the Helsinki Chamber Choir. The stage performance is directed by Teemu Mäki. This work is being premiered at the Helsinki Festival.

For Pixelache Helsinki 2011, defunensemble and KOELSE will build ZONE,
an audiovisual experience in which compositions overlap with
improvisations, traditional instruments meet electronic noise machines
and video projections merge with the soundscape in the space. It is
not a concert, not an installation, it is a unique three dimensional
experience which you will have to experience yourself.
